Step by Step

Set off on a one-day walking tour of Santo Domingo from Punta Cana and discover the history of one of the oldest cities in the Americas.

The excursion will be led by a local guide who will recount the history of colonisation and take you to see places, areas and various monuments dating back to the 5th century, such as:

  • Calle Las Damas: the first street in the Americas to be built in the colonial quarter.
  • Alcázar de Diego Colón: the home of Diego Colón, son of Christopher Columbus, and the only known residence of a relative of the explorer.
  • National Presidential Palace: a palace combining Victorian, Italian Renaissance, Greco-Roman Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Step inside to enjoy the views and learn about the city’s history through a 4D film.
  • Museo de las Casas Reales: step inside and learn about the history of the city and the country at this informative museum. Discover the collection of weapons that belonged to the former dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina.
  • Teatro de Bellas Artes: a Neoclassicalbuilding where artistic events, plays, concerts and shows are held.
  • Basilica-Cathedral of Santa María la Menor: this is the first cathedral to have been built in the New World. The Gothic style is the most prominent, although various other architectural styles can be seen.
  • Colonial Zone: this is the oldest part of Santo Domingo, where you can stroll through the historic centre.
  • Columbus Lighthouse: this is both a monument and a mausoleum. It symbolises the Christianisation of the Americas, and its exhibits include some Colombian jewellery and a Cuban ship.

The tour includes a stop at a typical Dominican restaurant so you can sample a traditional meal, as well as return transport in an air-conditioned coach from your hotel in Punta Cana.

The cathedral left me with my mouth open, I really don't understand how they were able to build such advanced structures with so little technology before if now it is already difficult.

I was surprised to see the first cathedral built in the Spanish colonies, it really has details, but not as many as I imagined.
