Here are a few history pills about the intriguing catacombs of Paris:

  • The ancient quarries of Tombe-Issoire, located under the plain of Montrouge, were chosen for their easy access, as they were outside the capital at the time. Imagine walking where the old quarrymen once walked!
  • Between 1785 and 1787, the first evacuations were carried out, emptying tombs, mass graves and the ossuary of the largest cemetery in Paris, that of the Saints Innocents. Can you imagine the amount of history accumulated here?
  • On 7 April 1786, this place was consecrated as the "Municipal Ossuary of Paris" and adopted the mythical name of "Catacombs", in reference to the fascinating Roman catacombs. A name that inspires respect and curiosity!
