Going to Positano and feel like taking the train? Sorry to break the news to you: there is no direct train line to this small town. However, you can make a combination of transport to enjoy the views of the unique villages and landscapes of the Amalfi Coast during your journey.

The nearest train stations to Positano are Sorrento and Vietri sul Mare and from their terminals you can take a bus or hydrofoil. Yes, you guessed it, this is the longest transfer between Naples and Positano, but you're almost certainly going for a walk so venture through Campania!

First option: Via Sorrento

First leg

  • Price: from €3.10 and upwards.
  • Recommendations: For this section on the way to your accommodation you take the Circumvesuviana train from the central station or Porta Nolana. The journey time is 70 minutes.

If you prefer to shorten the time by train, you can opt for the Campania Express train from the central station or Porta Nolana. Tickets for this type of train cost from €8 and your journey takes only 50 minutes.

If you are looking for a cheap way to get from Naples to Positano, you are in luck! There are several alternatives, but you should know that as with trains, you need to take at least two buses to get from the airport to the vertical city. Don't be discouraged, this option offers several advantages among which it is worth mentioning:

  • Convenient tickets. It is true that you can buy one ticket for each section, but it is also true that you can buy your COSTIERASITA ticket. They are valid in all the towns of the Amalfi Coast, namely: Agerola, Amalfi, Atrani, Cetara, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Maiori, Massa Lubrense, Meta di Sorrento, Minori, Positano, Piano di Sorrento, Praiano, Ravello and Salerno, as long as you travel on SITA Sud buses 24 hours a day.

  • And how much do these vouchers cost? They start at €10 and are easy to find in tabaccheria (convenience stores), kiosks, bars and cafés in all the towns along the coast. In Sorrento you can find a ticket office at the Circumvesuviana station, right next to the bus entrance.

  • Transport timetables. The bus timetable is convenient, as it runs from 6.30 am to 10 pm almost all year round, except for the Christmas holidays, when it stops at 9 pm and some public holidays. You can check the timetable here.

Now, with the advantages clear, I'll tell you about the two routes available, after all, this is the cheapest option.

  • Recommendations: go to Varco Immacolatella station, just 200 metres from the Port of Naples (Molo Immacolatella Vecchia). Once there, board your bus for Amalfi. Make sure you sit at the window. This is the most scenic bus route and also the cheapest.

5. Transfer from Naples airport to Positano by taxi or Uber: The more expensive, but comfortable option

Finally, the most exclusive option, for those travellers who wish to avoid connections while travelling in spacious cars, with comfortable seats for your legs and enough room for your travel bags in a private taxi. Arrival in Positano will be hassle-free and stress-free.

To opt for this alternative you can hire the UBER service, regional apps such as WeTaxi, ItTaxi or use one of the official taxis outside Naples airport.

In the case of the apps, fares depend on the taximeter, while in the case of the official taxis they have a fixed rate for extra-urban routes. In the case of the Naples - Positano route the price is around €130, and you just have to wait for the availability of your taxi, which varies depending on the season of travel.

Interesting details

  • Journeytime: 55 - 57 minutes.
  • Price: From 130 €.
  • Advantages of using this method: The first reason to choose them is comfort, there is nothing more pleasant than starting a trip on the right foot, knowing that the transfer to the accommodation will be aboard a comfortable transport and without strangers beyond the driver. The next advantage -and in my opinion the most important of this option-: you avoid connections, especially if you are travelling with your family. We have seen in the previous sections that the journeys are usually long and none of them are direct. Finally, taxi schedules are usually much easier to manage because they work 24 hours a day, which guarantees that you can adapt to your schedule and any inconvenience you may have.
  • How to book this transport: you can download the recommended apps on your mobile phone, namely UBER, We Taxi, It Taxi or even contract the service with your hotel, they usually offer the transfer service from the airport and communicate directly with the taxi line.
  • Recommended if: you prefer to guarantee your transfer with a comfortable and private service. However, I must point out that in Italy, this type of service is usually the last option due to its costs. But it depends on your tastes and travel budgets.
