Step by Step

Founded in 1654 by Cardinal Girolamo I Colonna and his nephew Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna, the Colonna Gallery is a living testament to Baroque splendour. Originally conceived to celebrate the victory at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, the gallery has witnessed countless historical events and has been home to the Colonna family for over twenty generations.

As you step into its sumptuous rooms, you will be greeted by an art collection spanning the 15th to the 19th centuries. Masterpieces by renowned artists such as Bronzino, Guercino, Salvator Rosa and Tintoretto adorn the walls, whilst the ceilings are richly decorated with frescoes depicting epic episodes from Italian history. Each room offers a unique atmosphere, reflecting the Colonna family’s refined taste and passion for art.

The palace gardens, situated at the foot of the Quirinal Hill, offer a haven of peace amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. With centuries-old fountains, classical sculptures and panoramic views of Rome, they are the perfect place to relax and reflect after exploring the gallery.
