Step by Step

This combined ticket will give you the opportunity to visit two elegant Roman residences: Palazzo Barberini and Palazzo Corsini. Both house the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, one of Italy's most important art galleries. It contains paintings by artists such as Caravaggio, Perugino, Van Dyck and El Greco. It also houses temporary exhibitions of great interest.

The buildings are not close to each other, the first is very close to the Quirinal (residence of the President of the Republic) while the second is on the banks of the Tiber, close to Rome's Botanical Garden. Below is a list of the most important works:

  • Portrait of Henry VIII, Hans Holbein the Younger - Executed on the occasion of the English monarch's fourth marriage in 1536. The artist manages to faithfully reproduce the clothes, sword and jewels (Barberini).
  • The Torture of Prometheus, Salvator Rosa - A crude scene, in which the eagle devours the belly of the man who dared to steal fire from the gods. The anatomical details are remarkable for their realism (Corsini).
  • View of the Tiber at Castel Sant'Angelo, Gaspar Van Wittel - Paintings of this type served as a "tourist attraction" for foreign travellers in the 17th century. Van Wittel brought urban views, typical of Dutch painting (Barberini), to Italy.
  • The Hare, Hans Hoffmann - A watercolour depicting the animal sitting amidst masterfully reproduced plants. The German was the court painter to Rudolf II of Habsburg, Holy Roman Emperor (Corsini)
  • Et in Arcadia ego, Guercino - A masterpiece characterised by a mystical aura. Two shepherds contemplate a skull, symbol of death, as the storm approaches the horizon (Barberini)

The ticket does not include an audio guide, but you can read descriptions of the works in each branch of the museum. Please note that Palazzo Barberini is usually closed on Mondays.

Visiting the Barberini Palace and the Corsini Gallery takes time. I took unforgettable photos of the paintings, the envy of my networks. I liked the fact that I was not in a hurry and I was able to see everything at my leisure, I recommend it to you.
