Step by Step

Embark on a half-day cultural journey that combines the best of Laos’s craftsmanship and cuisine. You’ll start with a pick-up in a vintage tuk-tuk from your hotel in the centre of Luang Prabang, a journey of just 10 minutes to a picturesque pavilion built in the traditional Laotian style.

As soon as you arrive, your guide will welcome you and explain the age-old relationship between the local community and bamboo: from fishing tackle to musical instruments. Next, you’ll learn how to sharpen knives and cut bamboo into strips, before weaving your own souvenir mat. You’ll find the ‘overlapping’ weaving technique relaxing and rewarding, thanks to the patient guidance of your instructor.

In the second part, you’ll discover why bamboo shoots are a staple ingredient in Laotian cuisine. In a hands-on demonstration, you’ll work alongside a local chef to prepare bamboo shoot soup, steamed bamboo shoots wrapped in banana leaves and a traditional dip. Each step will bring you closer to the region’s authentic flavours.

After the workshop, enjoy your dishes on the pavilion’s terrace, surrounded by rice paddies and mountains. You’ll have time to relax, chat with the locals and learn some traditional games before returning by tuk-tuk to your hotel, armed with new skills and flavours.

The chair is a bit hard during the weaving part, but it flies by with the chatting.

It's worth every penny: transport, materials and a lot of Laotian cooking tips.

View of the river while you eat your own plate, a zen moment.
