Step by Step

Karlovy Vary is one of those places that seems made for a leisurely stroll. The town stretches across wooded hills and follows the course of the River Teplá, surrounded by colourful buildings, historic hotels and elegant colonnades that evoke its past as one of Europe’s great spa destinations.

The excursion begins in Prague and heads westwards across the Czech Republic. Once in Karlovy Vary, the guide will take you on a journey through the history of a town linked since the 14th century to Emperor Charles IV and to the hot springs that ultimately brought it international fame.

During the walk, you’ll visit some of its most iconic spots, such as the Mill Colonnade, with its distinctive Neo-Renaissance architecture, the delicate Market Colonnade, and the Boiling Spring Colonnade, home to the town’s most powerful spring.

You’ll also see buildings such as the Church of St Mary Magdalene and pass by the historic Grandhotel Pupp, one of Karlovy Vary’s most iconic landmarks. The scenery is complemented by the riverside promenades, where much of the town’s life and monumental architecture is concentrated.

You’ll then have some free time to continue exploring at your own pace. You can visit the thermal springs and sample their mineral waters, look for some of the local specialities, or simply sit back and enjoy the atmosphere before returning to Prague.

Nine hours might be a bit long if you prefer short excursions, but we thought it was just right for getting to know Karlovy Vary at a leisurely pace.
