Fuerteventura is one of the best destinations for families with children, given its leisure and cultural offer. The island has all kinds of plans for all ages, but if you take your children with you, there's plenty for them to do there too.

From excursions on pirate ships, to wave pools or nature reserves with wild animals. In all of them, the youngest members of the family will have a great time. So, if you are planning to go to Fuerteventura with children, read on and I'll tell you more.

1. Sail the sea on a pirate ship

With this activity you will make your children remember their trip to Fuerteventura forever. The ride on the pirate ship of the schooner Pedro Sartaña will make their imagination fly for a few hours. Please note that this activity is not suitable for children under 3 years old.

As if that wasn't enough, the grown-ups will enjoy not only watching them have fun, but also the views that the excursion provides.

The excursion starts from the harbour of Morro Jable, which is easily accessible by car. In addition to the beautiful ride along the coast of Fuerteventura, the boat also functions as a dolphin watching tour.

However, it is important to note that, due to the freedom of the dolphins, this is not always possible. On the other hand, it is also possible to add water activities, such as snorkelling, to the booking.

What does the pirate ship tour include?

In this activity, both children and adults will learn how to tie knots and different navigation manoeuvres. You'll also take part in different competitions and games with the little ones, and you'll be able to win one of the prizes.

During the trip, the boat makes several stops so that passengers can take a dip. The booking also includes a typical Canarian lunch at sea.

  • Price: From 35 euros
  • Where: Puerto de Morro Jable
  • Duration: Approximately 4 hours.

2. Discover the depths of the sea in a submarine

One of the most impressive activities you can do in Fuerteventura with children is to go on an excursion on the Subcat Morro Jable. This is a completely different boat to anything you have ever seen before.

The Subcat Morro Jable is one of only 3 catamaran-submarines in the world. Yes, you read that right. This boat combines both modalities to provide an unusual experience.

At the beginning of the trip, you will sail the sea in a catamaran, enjoying the sea breeze in your hair and the incredible views. This makes this part of the activity one of the best boat trips in Fuerteventura.

Along the way, you'll see the best beaches on the island and you'll even get the chance to take a dip or two. During this part of the excursion, a guide will explain the curiosities and characteristics of the marine fauna and flora of the area.

Delve into the marine world

After the catamaran ride, you and the rest of the passengers will go inside the submarine. This is where the dive begins and the most exciting part of the trip.

Through the windows of the submarine you will see the different animals that live in the depths of the sea. It is impressive to see them in complete freedom and at such a short distance. Without a doubt, this plan is ideal for all members of the family.

3. Go to Acua Water Park

This activity will become one of the children's favourites, and they will have a great time riding all kinds of attractions. The Acua Water Park is one of the best water parks in Fuerteventura.

It has rides for all ages, so don't rule out a visit if you think your children are too young. Without a doubt, this is a perfect plan for those sweltering hot days in Fuerteventura. This way, you'll be able to escape the heat while having fun with the family at the same time.

One of the most famous and most suitable attractions for families with children is Rio Lento. It is a water circuit with floats. For your information, children under one metre tall must wear muffs and be accompanied by an adult. The big brother of Rio Lento is Rio Rápido, this time a course full of curves that you will cross in a float.

In addition to the above, another fun attraction is the wave pool, which imitates the waves of the sea. This pool has different depths, with a minimum depth of 20 centimetres and a maximum of 2.50 metres. For the more daring, I recommend attractions such as the Zig Zag, the Castle or the Kamikazes. The second is a set of slides with a height of 14 metres. However, a minimum height of 1.20 metres is required.

What services does Acua Water Park offer?

As for the services offered by Acua Water Park, the park has a restaurant serving fast food, such as hot dogs, hamburgers and sandwiches.

There is also an ice cream parlour and a souvenir shop. As a reminder, don't forget to bring sunscreen and hats to protect the little ones from the sun.

  • Where: Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen, 41, Corralejo, Fuerteventura
  • Opening times: Open every day from 10:30am to 5:30pm.

4. Visit Oasis Wildlife

Oasis Wildlife is an animal reserve located in Fuerteventura, where you can see all kinds of wild animals up close. It is the largest animal rescue centre in the Canary Islands.

The place is perfect to visit with children, who will be amazed by the African elephants, crocodiles and cheetahs. In the park you will find all kinds of animals typical of the African continent, such as camels, sea lions or hippopotamuses.

You will also learn about the processes that are carried out to save endangered species. Part of the entrance fee is earmarked for the conservation of certain species, so with your visit you will be contributing to their rescue.

On the other hand, there are also different educational and recreational activities for children. As if that weren't enough, the reserve has a farm with domestic animals, as well as a botanical garden, which is in fact the largest in Europe.

  • Price: From around 23 euros for children aged 4 to 11 years old and 38 euros for adults. There are discounts if you buy your ticket in advance on their website
  • Where: Carretera Gral Jandía s/n in the South Zone of Fuerteventura.
  • Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 6pm

5. Learn at the Salt Museum

Perhaps museums are not the perfect place to go with children, especially the youngest ones. Given the artistic and historical importance of the objects they hold, museums are very strict with their rules. However, children are often unable to comply with these rules.

Nevertheless, there are all kinds of museums and, among all of them, there are some that are ideal for children, such as interactive museums. One of the most famous interactive museums in Fuerteventura is the Salt Museum.

The Salt Museum is located in the village of Las Salinas del Carmen. It tries to show the value of the island's salt tradition, telling curiosities about this product of great historical importance. Outside the museum you can see how the process of obtaining salt works, which has been the same since the 19th century.

  • Price: From 6 euros
  • Where: Barrio Las Salinas, nº 2
  • Opening hours: Monday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm

6. Let your children slide down the Corralejo Dunes

Another suggestion for Fuerteventura with children is a visit to the Parque Natural Dunas de Corralejo, one of the main attractions of the **island'**s natural heritage.

The drive to the park is easy and incredibly beautiful, with the sea as a showcase all the way. What's more, some of Fuerteventura's best beaches are to be found in this area. For this reason, my suggestion is that you set off early in the morning, so that you can stop and enjoy some of these beaches.

As for the Dunes of Corralejo Natural Park, it is made up of a total of 2,600 hectares of dunes of great interest to the scientific community, bathed by turquoise waters.

This is a completely different place to any you have seen before, a paradise that invites you to peace and relaxation. In the park you will be able to spot different types of birds. Children will love climbing the dunes and sliding down them like a slide.

Great Beaches of Corralejo

I also recommend that you head to the beaches known as the Great Beaches of Corralejo. Unlike other beaches in the area, the water is usually calm in this area, making it a safe swimming spot for the youngest members of the family.

In addition, the Great Beaches have all kinds of services, such as beach bars, parking and public toilets. This makes it the perfect place to spend a day in the sun.

If you prefer, there are different companies that organise tours of the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park. There are all kinds of options, from buggy excursions to quad safaris or boat trips.

7. Discover the beautiful island of Lobos with your children

The next activity is very close to the previous one. Isla de Lobos is named after the sea lions that used to visit the island years ago. However, the presence of these animals ceased to exist because of the fishing that takes place in this area of Fuerteventura.

To get to Isla de Lobos from Corralejo, all you have to do is go to the pier, from where daily boat trips are organised. The trip takes approximately 15 minutes to reach your destination.

Although it is a very small island, it is one of the best things to do in Fuerteventura. What's more, its small size is ideal for the little ones, as it won't take you more than an hour to walk from one end to the other.

This way, you won't have to worry about the kids complaining. Due to its ecological wealth, Isla de Lobos has been declared a National Park and the surrounding waters are an underwater reserve area. As if all this were not enough, it has also been declared a bird protection area. For all of the above reasons, it is important to be respectful of the environment during your visit.

What to do on Lobos Island

There is a restaurant on the island, which is run by the only two locals. It serves menus made with fresh local fish. After lunch, I recommend that you put on your swimming costume and crab shrimps and go for a swim in the paradisiacal waters that bathe the island of Lobos.

As the waters are crystal clear, it is one of the best places to enjoy a snorkelling experience in Fuerteventura, and you will be able to see the marine fauna of the area.

If you are travelling with children who are not too young, I also recommend you climb the La Caldera Volcano, which offers the best views of the whole island, with views of both Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Finally, there are also organised excursions with water activities, such as paddle surfing or kayaking.

8. Show your children the magic mountain of Fuerteventura

Tindaya| ©Jose Mesa

The Tindaya Mountain, also known as the Sacred Mountain of Fuerteventura, is a magical place that you must visit on your visit to the island.

It is located in Llano de Esquinzo, in the municipality of La Oliva and forms part of the Biosphere Reserve. It is 400 metres high and has completely different geographical characteristics to the rest of the mountains.

It is not only worth visiting for its colours, shape and views, but also for the history it hides. Tindaya Mountain has been of great archaeological interest for years, as it is home to engravings from the cave age, as well as footprints with centuries of history.

At one time, the natives of the island attributed magical properties to the mountain, giving it the name of Montaña Sagrada (Sacred Mountain). Today, it has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, as well as a Natural Monument and a Point of Geological Interest.

What to see and do on Tindaya Mountain

Here you can see unique species, such as the cuernúa, a purple plant typical of the Canary Islands and Maruecos. You will also have the chance to see birds such as the Saharan racer or the Houbara bustard, as well as shrews or Atlantic lizards.

On your visit to Tindaya Mountain, I recommend that you visit the Bailadero de Las Brujas Cave, a place where rituals were performed centuries ago.

To do this excursion, you will first have to go to the village of La Oliva. In addition, if you are going to do it on your own, you will have to ask for a permit from the Fuerteventura Council's Department of the Environment. If you hire a company, they will take care of the paperwork.

9. Explore the Ajuy Caves with the little ones

In the Betancuria Rural Park there is an area declared a Natural Monument: the Ajuy Caves. These caves are located in the municipality of Ajuy and are of great importance at regional level, as they are the first geological formations in the Canary Islands.

They cover a total of 32 hectares and form part of the submarine lava that emerged during the Cretaceous period to give rise to the island.

In fact, their value is so high that they are one of the 150 areas of greatest geological interest in the world. Visiting them, you will feel like a character in a film about the beginnings of the earth, given their nature.

What is the excursion to the Ajuy Caves like?

The excursion to the caves starts in the village, which you can reach by car. Once you have reached the village, you will have to go to Ajuy beach, which is about 500 metres from the caves.

I recommend doing this excursion on a sunny day with plenty of time to stop at the beach for a dip and a drink. Afterwards, walk along the path that leads to the caves, full of dunes and lime kilns.

When you get to the caves, the temperature drops a few degrees due to the humidity, so it is advisable to bring some warm clothes. My recommendation is to wait for the sunset and then head for the village of Ajuy.

10. Explore Fuerteventura's best beaches

Of course, you can't visit Fuerteventura and not wander along its wonderful beaches. These are the main attraction of the island, so I recommend that you experience as many of them as possible.

Going to the beach is one of the favourite plans for the little ones, who have a great time making sand castles or splashing in the sea. And it doesn't require much planning, just a few snacks and sunscreen.

You can also have a great day out if you book one of the kayaking trips in Fuerteventura, another fun way to sail the waters of the Atlantic.

Among the best beaches in Fuerteventura for families with children are Costa Calma beach, Esmeralda beach, Los Lagos beach, Caleta de Fuste beach and Morro Jable beach.
