If you are in Fuerteventura or you are thinking of travelling to this destination, you cannot miss the fascinating island of Lobos. Without a doubt, excursions to this neighbouring island are among the best things to do in Fuerteventura. An excursion to Lobos is the perfect plan if you are looking to relax, enjoy an incredible uncrowded beach or practice water sports such as surfing or snorkelling.

Here's an important fact you should know beforehand if you want to visit the island: to enter you need an official permit, as access is limited to just 400 people a day. You can get it in two ways: by buying a ticket for one of the excursions, as most of them are included, or on your own from the official Lobos website. With this authorisation, you have a maximum time of 4 hours to tour the island. You can choose between two shifts: from 08:00 am to 12:00 pm or from 14:00 pm to 18:00 pm.

If you have more than one day to spend in Fuerteventura, in addition to the excursions to Lobos, I recommend you to do one of the following excursions Lanzarote Boat Tours from Fuerteventura.

Now, join me as I tell you about the best excursions to do on the island of Lobos coming from Fuerteventura, their costs, duration and much more!

If you plan to travel to Fuerteventura with your family, this is definitely one of the best activities to do with children.

This tour starts in the morning in a small boat in the port of Corralejo and on the way to Lobos you can sail with dolphins playing and jumping from one side to the other, sea turtles and impressive whales. This is an excursion for young and old alike. When you embark in Lobos, you can take a family trip to some of its most famous beaches, such as the popular La Concha beach, where you can go paddle surfing or snorkelling, or if you prefer, you can just lie in the sun and relax completely. Next to the beach, you will find the Isla de Lobos salt flats which is a nice place to go for a walk and take some pictures. Join a ferry and sail to the island of Lobos with a breathtaking view of the seabed. This vessel departs from the port of Corralejo in Fuerteventura and takes approximately 15 minutes to reach the island. In addition, the excursion includes snorkelling with all the corresponding equipment in the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic.

Book your place in the water taxi and travel in 10 minutes from Corralejo harbour in Fuerteventura to the island of Lobos.

Surely you have used the taxi service in your town or when you went on holiday. The driver picks you up, asks you where you are going and when he arrives at your destination, he charges you a fee for the journey. But how does the watertaxi work? Well, the same. The only difference with the traditional taxi service is that instead of driving on asphalt, the driver drives through the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by a myriad of fish.

Once the water taxi drops you off at Puertito de Lobos, you have between two and four hours of free time for snorkelling, diving and kayaking among other fantastic attractions. Remember that it is essential that you do not exceed the four hours allowed on the official permit.

If you choose this tour to visit the island of Lobos, I suggest you book your ticket in advance as available seats tend to fill up quickly. The ticket includes the transfer to and from the island but with one disadvantage compared to the other excursions: it does not include the official permit you need to visit the island. You have to arrange this on your own.

Things to do on Lobos Island

As I mentioned earlier, some of the best things to do on Lobos Island include water sports such as surfing, kayaking and snorkelling. But if what you want is to get to know the island in depth, I advise you to opt for hiking and discover on foot its untouched attractions of urban intervention, its beaches with crystalline waters and much more!

Hiking on Lobos Island

Although you can do this excursion on your own, as the trails on Lobos are perfectly signposted, it is advisable to buy one of the tourist packages that offer the trip. In addition to the permit to visit the island, most of them include:

  • Pick up from and return to your hotel.
  • Return ticket for the ferry from Fuerteventura to Lobos Island.
  • An English speaking guide to accompany you on the hike.
  • Hiking poles.

What are the places you should not miss on Lobos Island?

Although the permits to visit the island of Lobos from Fuerteventura are granted for four hours, and it may not seem long enough, this time will be enough for you to take a tour of the island and fall in love forever with its landscapes and places. I'm going to group the best ones so that you don't miss them:

La Concha Beach

This desert beach, considered the best on the island of Lobos, is ideal for relaxing. Its sand is as white as flour and the sea water is calm, without waves, and turquoise in colour. Believe me, it has nothing to envy to the Caribbean. If you are planning a visit to this beach, I recommend you bring your own food and drink, as it does not have any kind of service.

La Caldera Mountain

This imposing 120-metre-high mountain was once an untouched volcano and is the highest point on the island. Getting to the top of the mountain is not at all difficult if you are in generally good physical condition and have no back or knee injuries to prevent you from doing so. Besides, when you are at the top and contemplate the incredible view of the whole island of Lobos you will see that the effort was worth it.

Restaurant Antoñito el Farero

It is located next to the Puertito and is the only place in Lobos where you can stop for a bite to eat. It is currently run by the family of Antoñito, who was the founder of the restaurant and one of the first inhabitants of the island. It's all in the family.

If you are a fan of fish, this restaurant will become your favourite: they specialise in seafood, paella and other seafood. All dishes are super fresh and contain the best quality ingredients. If you don't like fish, you can choose from other snacks or sandwiches from the house.

To get a table, I recommend you book in advance. They are often fully booked as it is the only restaurant on the island and also because of the good reviews of the food.

To visit the island of Lobos from Fuerteventura, there are several excursions and companies to choose from. Although you can book your place until the day before the trip, I suggest you don't rest on your laurels and book well in advance. For two reasons: firstly, there are limited places available; and secondly, by booking in advance you can get good deals that will not be available close to the date of the excursion.
